Details: the drivers behind the forecast Übersee

This page shows the main drivers of the wind system on the lake as a forecast for the next 4 days. How the forecast works

Dashed lines are limits we derived from our measurements at the spot.

Wind systems at this spot

In Übersee, almost every windy day brings a westerly wind from the west to the southwest. Easterly winds reach the south shore only weakly; in such cases, Seebruck on the north shore and Gstadt are suitable launch sites. The Föhn can reach Übersee as a southerly wind, especially during the winter months. It typically brings winds of 6 to 10 knots with gusts of 15 to 20 knots and is rarely strong enough for a full wind day.

The drivers

Upper wind west/east

Calculated and shown is the wind at about 1.5 km altitude (850 hPa) above the lake: upwards the share from the west, downwards the share from the east, plus the direction (right axis).

At Übersee the wind comes almost only with the large-scale weather pattern from west to southwest: on 126 of 133 windy days in our measurements. The stronger the west wind aloft, the more often it also blows at the shore. From about 30 knots aloft there was wind in about one hour in six between 8 am and 7 pm in our measurements, with less than 15 knots hardly ever.

East wind only arrives weakly at the south shore, even with strong east wind aloft.

Foehn

Calculated and shown is the air pressure in Bolzano minus the air pressure in Innsbruck, i.e. south minus north of the main Alpine ridge. If the value is positive (top), the air pushes over the Alps from the south and drops into the valley on the north side as a warm, dry and gusty foehn.

Foehn only sometimes gets through to Lake Chiemsee, then as a south wind of usually 6 to 10 knots with gusts of around 15 to 20 knots, mainly in the winter half-year. From about +8 hPa (dashed line) there was south wind of 8 knots or more at Übersee on every third day, between +3 and +8 hPa on about 8 % of the days, below that on 2 %. So the line shows from when it often gets through. But the south wind can come from foehn from about +3 hPa. If the value is negative (bottom), the higher pressure is in the north: no foehn.
